본 연구의 목적은 LDA 기반 토픽모델링을 활용하여 학령인구 감소로 나타나는 고등교육 관련 뉴스 기사들에 나타난 주요 키워드 및 토픽의 지역별 경향을 파악하여 시사점을 제시하는 데 있다. 키워드 분석 결과, ‘교육’, ’학령인구‘, ‘지원’이 핵심 키워드로 도출되었으며, LDA 기반 토픽모델링을 통해 각 지역별로 ‘대학 기반의 지역 혁신 및 인재 양성’, ‘대학 입학 경쟁률의 변동성과 지역적 영향’, ‘대학평가 및 구조조정’, ‘학령인구 감소와 대학 구조조정’, ‘대학 교육 혁신 및 지역 연계 강화’, ‘지역 대학의 위기 및 구조조정’ 등의 토픽이 추출되었다. 연구결과, 지역 대학의 위기는 단순히 학생 수의 감소를 넘어서 지역 경제와 직결되는 사회적 이슈로 확장됨을 발견하였다. 이는 대학이 지역 인재 유출 방지와 경제 활성화에 중요한 역할을 한다는 것을 시사한다. 특히, ‘대학 평가 및 구조조정’에 관한 토픽은 지방대학의 어려움을 극명하게 드러내며, 이에 대한 정책적 접근과 개선이 시급함을 나타낸다. 또한, ‘대학 교육 혁신 및 지역 연계 강화’ 토픽은 지역 산업과의 연계를 통한 대학의 새로운 가치 창출 가능성을 함축하고 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 토픽들을 바탕으로 대학과 지역 사회 간의 협력이 학령인구 감소의 문제를 완화시킬 수 있는 잠재적인 해결책이 될 수 있음을 제안한다. 아울러, 정책 입안자와 교육 기관에게 실질적인 방향성을 제시하며, 지역 대학의 지속 가능한 발전을 위한 구체적인 전략 수립에 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

The purpose of this study is to identify the key keywords, trends, and topics over time in higher education-related news articles that emerge from the decrease in the school-age population using LDA-based topic modeling. Keyword analysis revealed ‘education’, ‘school-age population’, and ‘support’ as the core keywords. The LDA-based topic modeling analysis extracted topics for each region, including ‘regional innovation and talent development based on universities’, ‘variability in university admission rates and regional impacts’, ‘university evaluations and restructuring’, ‘university restructuring due to declining school-age populations’, ‘innovation in university education and strengthening regional connections’, and ‘crises and restructuring of local universities’. The study found that the crisis of regional universities extends beyond a mere decrease in student numbers to become a social issue directly linked to the regional economy. This suggests that the role of universities is crucial in preventing the outflow of local talent and in revitalizing the economy. Particularly, the topic of ‘university evaluation and restructuring’ starkly highlights the difficulties faced by regional universities, underscoring the urgency for policy approaches and improvements. Moreover, the topic of ‘innovation in university education and strengthening of regional connections’ suggests the potential for new value creation by universities through their linkage with local industries. This research proposes that cooperation between universities and local communities can be a potential solution to mitigate the problems caused by the declining school-age population. It also offers practical direction for policymakers and educational institutions and is expected to contribute to the establishment of specific strategies for the sustainable development of local universities.
