본 연구는 일반대학원 혁신을 위한 구체적인 방안을 모색하기 위하여 대학원장의 인식을 분석하고자 하였다. 연구결과를 바탕으로 논의 및 결론을 제시하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 대학차원의 우수 대학원생 유치를 위한 방안 중 학부 수업 및 개인적인 상담을 통한 학생들에게 대학원 정보제공, 외국인 유학생 유치 관리 시스템 강화가 중요도와 실현가능성이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 대학차원의 교육부분 개선 방안 중 융･복합 교육과정 확대, 산학협력을 강화한 사회맞춤형 교육과정 확대 등이 중요도와 실현가능성 모두 높은 것으로 나타났다. 연구부분 개선 방안으로는 연구역량 강화, 연구 윤리 강화 등이 중요도와 실현가능성 모두 높은 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 교수차원의 교육 및 연구부분 개선 방안 중 세미나 형태의 수업 활성화 등 교수법 개선 노력, 논문지도의 내실화 등이 중요도와 실현가능성 모두 높은 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 정부차원에서는 4단계 BK 21사업 선정 대학수 확대, 대학원 여건(시설 등) 개선을 위한 신규 사업 신설, 학제 간 융･복합 교육 및 연구 프로그램 지원 사업 등이 중요도와 실현가능성 모두 높은 것으로 나타났다. 결론적으로 미래 사회에 대비하여 대학원 혁신을 위해서는 대학원 교육 및 연구 지원 역량 강화와 대학원 연구환경 제도 정비에 중점을 두고, 대학의 교육 및 연구 역량을 강화할 수 있는 기반을 조성할 필요가 있다. 정부는 재정지원 체계를 정비하고, 대학은 교육･연구 여건을 개선하고, 교수는 학생의 성장을 촉진할 수 있는 학생지도 방안을 마련해야 할 것이다.

The purpose of this study is to develop the graduate school reform plan based on the analysis of graduate school deans’ perspectives in South Korea. The results are as follows. First, the most important and feasible ways for universities to recruit more elite graduate students were to provide undergraduate students with academic and personal counselings related to information of graduate programs and to enhance current management systems of international students. Second, the most important and feasible ways for universities to improve their current graduate programs were to develop more interdisciplinary and industry-academic cooperation. Moreover, the most important and feasible ways for universities to improve their current research were to enhance research capacity and research ethics in the institutions. Third, the most important and feasible ways for faculties to improve their teaching and research were to adopt more seminar-style classes, to develop teaching methods, and to reinforce dissertation/thesis review and guidance. Fourth, the most important and feasible ways for the government to support and lead the graduate school improvement were to expand the 4th phase BK21 program and to develop new programs for the improvement of graduate schools facilities and interdisciplinary education and research. As a result, with regard to graduate school reform, there should be the improvements of institutions’ capacity of graduate education and research and the reorganization of their research system to meet future needs. Moreover, the government needs to reorganize the current funding system for graduate schools, universities need to improve their education and research, and faculties need to improve their capacity of academic advising and support to empower graduate students to become successful independent scholars.
